Tanker trucks are motor vehicles that are made specifically to carry certain loads such as gas, water, milk, liquid waste, fuel and so much more. Tanker trucks of various dimensions can be seen on the roads in countries all over the world. The industry is quite large and customers are able to get custom made tankers from the companies that make them if they so wish. Countries that have severe water supply problems may have a lot of water tanker trucks making deliveries to those residents that can afford to pay extra to water supplying companies. Some smaller tanker trucks are used for the transportation and delivery of liquefied petroleum gas, known widely by its acronym LPG. This LPG is used all around the world and is gaining popularity in countries that previously largely depended on fuel sources like wood and coal for cooking and heating purposes. The increase in the use of the gas also translates to an increase in the use of the tanker trucks that transport it. Big oil companies like Shell and BP use fuel trucks to transport their products in many countries all over the world. Most fuel garages offer various oil products to their customers, for example, garages will have diesel and unleaded fuel. Some go as far as to offer different grades of these fuels to customers. Instead of commissioning several vehicles to make these deliveries to a single fuel station, these companies can get one fuel tanker truck that has several different compartments in it. Tanker truck road safety

Some freak accidents involving tanker trucks, especially the ones transporting fuel, have taken place in different parts of the world. In some cases drivers are over worked, being made to do many shifts in a day even though it is not safe to do so. Many times trucking companies are just worried about the bottom line. They try to make as much profit as possible while spending the least amount of money possible in salaries and investing in employee safety. Such companies tend to not hire enough employees, and to over work the ones that they do have. As a result of this some drivers are so tired that they fall asleep at the wheel or drive in a reckless manner and cause horrific accidents. Every now and again there are reports about tanker truck explosions after the driver either strays into the lane for oncoming traffic or collides into buildings or some other infrastructure. People are seriously injured or lose their lives in these incidents. Governments do put rules in place to curb this sort of practice but in developing countries it is not so easy to enforce these laws or to monitor all the trucking companies and their operational policies.

In some of the more developed regions of the world, like North Dakota in the United States of America, certain groups are lobbying for the removal of these trucks from the roads. They are advocating instead for investment to be made in longer pipe lines to transport the oil. The government seems to be taking this into serious consideration. Some pipe lines are already elongated. Should this be fully implemented it will mean that these pipe lines can carry oil from refineries all the way to the retailers without the need for oil tanker trucks. It is an understandable stance in light of how volatile oil is. It is a lot of power for one person, the driver of the truck, to have. It can cause great harm if the driver is negligent. Many lives have already been lost unnecessarily all across the globe. For now, however, tanker trucks remain the number one mode of transport for this precious and much needed commodity inland.
