How to Check Car Oil

It is very important to check your car oil regularly. When the oil level becomes too low, it may cause machine seizure and overheating. It is actually very easy especially with the use of an oil tank stick.

  • As precaution, let the engine rest and cool down for about ten minutes before you touch it. It can burn your skin badly if you do not do this.
  • Open the hood with a button inside the car, if there’s any, or do it manually. Open it completely and use the metal prop to prevent it from closing as you check the oil.
  • Pull the dipstick out and clean it with the use of a rag. This is to make sure that you will be able to take accurate oil measurement. When you pull it out initially, it may have marks from splashes of the oil when the car was moving. It is best to start with a clean dipstick.
  • Insert the dipstick again and make sure that it goes in straight. If there were unnecessary movements, pull it out again, wipe the dipstick, and reinsert it.
  • There are usually “full” and “add” marks on the dipstick to help you in measuring the oil level. These marks tell you whether you need to add more oil or if you still have enough.
  • After checking the quantity of your oil, you should also check its quantity. If it is still clear, it is still fine. However, if it is cloudy or if you can see traces of debris, then it is time for an oil change.

Aside from charts, some manufacturers and suppliers also have oil calculator available online. Such calculators usually ask for the liquid level, the diameter of your oil tank, and the length of your tank. You are also asked to identify whether you took the measurement of the statistics that they asked for in inches, in feet, in meters, or in centimeters.
